Olive's Field Trip to the Grocery Store

One thing that I love about our preschool is that Ms Jani believes in giving the kids new experiences and learning by doing. I mean, how many neighborhood preschool do you know that are touring a grocery store during the week that they learn about community helpers? Yeah, it pretty much rocks! I was excited that I got to go with Olive. We went to Macey's grocery store and they did a really good job with the kids. Olive loved it.

When we first got there a lady walked past our group of kids waiting at the front and gave three kids quarters to buy some gum from the gum ball machine. Olive tried so hard to be tough but her disappointment got the best of her and she ran to my arms crying. Another mom felt so bad for her and  the other kids that got left out that she got everyone quarters. Olive was so excited. This is her sad picture after she was jumping around and her gum fell out of her mouth and so she had to through it away. Oh it's a hard life!

I actually thought the tour of the grocery store was pretty interesting. They took us back to the bakery and showed us all the huge machines they use to make everything. He showed us the oven where they bake the bread.

The best part was that everyone got a cookie as they left the bakery!
Then he took us to the back of the store and showed us where the giant refrigerators and freezers were. Olive was a bit weary of going into the cold.

Here is Olive raising her hand to speak. She has lots to say and likes to tell people everything that she thinks. At least she has learned it is rude to just talk all the time, so now she raises her hand when she wants to talk. It's pretty funny.

Olive really liked the produce section. The guy giving us the tour kept trying to stump the kids with funny produce things. Olive knew, or could name,  everything he held up. The only one she got stumped on was fennel. I was pretty proud of her diverse diet that she knew all these different foods!

Behind the produce department we got to see where they package and prepare everything. They also passed out orange wedges and Olive was delighted.

Then they took us to the front of the store and let us see all the offices. They had a hallway that had one-way windows that overlooked the whole store and the kids really liked standing there and watching over the store.
They also had a "theater" with a full kitchen and chairs where the used to do cooking demonstrations. The kids liked climbing in the seats and roaming around for awhile.

At the end they each got a goodie bag.

Olive checking out her loot. They actually got some pretty good stuff. Their bags included little coloring books, a bowl, a king size candy bar, among other things. It was such a fun field trip!

Finally here is Olive's 4 year old preschool class:
