The New Master Bedroom Decor

I have been meaning for months to  show some updates of our house since we have switched them all around.  I'm not exactly sure why I want to post them. Everyone (if anyone) who reads this blog has probably already been to my house and seen the changes. Maybe I'm posting for myself sometime in the future. Or also because I love seeing other people's homes and how they decorate. I love reading blogs of people that I actually know and what their houses look like. In any case, it's been nearly six months, but finally last Saturday our rooms were clean, and I remembered to take pictures of them.

This all started when we needed Milo to start sleeping in his own bed and not in a basket in the office. Because of his reflux (among other things) it wasn't working out for them to share a room. They didn't actually sleep one full night together. We decided that if we were going to move them around, we might as well move everyone. We didn't paint anything or even get new curtains anywhere, just moved furniture around. Let's start with our new master bedroom. The last time you saw it, it looked like this:

We took over the old nursery for a couple of reasons. 1) We thought it was bigger than the room we were currently in, and 2) by having our master right off of our front room it caused some guests to feel like they were invading our private space. I never felt uncomfortable if their kids went in there, Olive played in there all the time. But I often noticed that when other people came over, it was an issue. So to solve it we moved out. Now the room looks like this:
It wasn't actually bigger than our original master, it just looked bigger because it had lots of tiny, child sized furniture in it. Although it is actually a few inches smaller, the layout makes is much more functional and so it seems bigger because the space is used better. Plus we upgraded our closet big time and we got lots more windows.
This lamp was basically the inspiration for all of the design. I found the lamps and then tried to find things to coordinate with them. I love the color, they are a bright aqua (although this picture doesn't show how vibrant they are), the geometric shapes. and the simplicity of design.

Then I found the bedding. I really liked it at the time and there are still things that I do like about it. I love that I was able to find the matching pillows for the color of the lamp shade (it might be hard to tell but there is a big aqua pillow in there and the gray one in front has the same color stitching). It was a kinda cheap comforter set and so it is just cheap, scratchy material. I am already kind of sick of it. When I picked it out at the store I thought it was black, but it is actually dark blue, so I don't love that about it either.

The opposite wall looks like this.

Scott's dad has found him some old antique camera's. So Scott has started a collection and he has some pretty cool ones, some of which actually still work. Since we were looking for a place to store them all we thought it would be a great detail for our room. And since Scott lost his office (you will see what it is now another day) he needed a place to store his instruments. I think the way it all came together looks great. Scott doesn't think it looks like a girls lives in this room, but I just remind him about the aqua lamp shades.

This is a close up so you can see some of the cool cameras.
Overall we are really love being in this room and I am so happy with how everything turned out.

The Night of the Dance

And the winner was:

Even Olive was getting into it. I think she wore 3 hats just that night. We had so much fun dancing, especially Olive with her friends. I tried to take some pictures but they were all so blurry (kinda like the ones above) and dark so you can't even really tell what is going on.
It was a blast and I think they are going to make it an annual party. They had a group come in and dance the Charleston, which is the wrong era, but still fun. We knew it was time to go when Olive started lying down on the floor. When we got to the car Olive said "I danced so much my feet hurt!" I told her that was called "dancing til you drop".
Here are some more of our cute hat model. She thought the hats and wearing my shoes was the best thing ever.

Wait until next week when you see our 20's costumes.

If I lived in 1945

I feel like I am learning a lot about myself lately. The big thing that has stuck out to me is that I have a hard time keeping things small and simple. It just is not within me. I get so many ideas and my brain cannot just shut itself off. Normal, easy ideas get blown up into big, over the top projects. I don't know how to stop! It's like I have no control over myself. With that in mind here is my post.

Have you seen those really amazing old photos that are simple and yet the woman are so elegant in them? I decided that I wanted some pictures like that. For a long time I have loved the 20's, they are just so magical. Then we were invited to the funnest party ever. It was a big band 1940's themed party. So then I started getting obsessed with the 40's. They had a great live band that was fabulous. It was a bake off so people brought out their go-to-deliciousness for dessert. It was a party for all ages to have fun and dance. They encouraged us to dress up like the 40's. So....I went to DI. I didn't just find one outfit, I found 3. Then I thought this might be my opportunity to try and get that photo I want.  Being the over the top person that I am, I had Scott document me in all my outfits. I'm am sure you are laughing hysterically at me right now but,  I actually had a lot of fun.  So here they are:

What do you think? I was kinda in love with all of them and I was a bit surprised at how many pieces came from my own wardrobe. I am obviously already attracted to those styles. If you are wondering about the hats, they are all from this amazing hat collection that my mom has been building for years. Awesome right?
So which of the 3 costumes do you think that I chose?

And for a sneak peek at my costume for our "Flappers and Fedoras' Party
As you can tell, I definitely don't take myself too seriously!

Matching Sweaters

Do you remember the last time we tried to take picture of these two cuties together? (did I not publish the last time we went to a studio together because those are also awesomely bad!) Well, we thought it had been enough time that we ought to torture them again. No, truthfully we had to document their adorable sweaters. I made them each a coordinating sweater before they were born knowing someday they would make adorable pictures. If you look really closely you can see how the details on the trims match each other.  Although both boys were in pretty good moods, they are also mobile now so that was quite the challenge. We definitely made the photographer earn her money that day. So without further ado, Matching Sweaters:

And here are Milo's 9 month pictures:

OH Preschool how we love you!

One of my favorite times of day is picking Olive up from preschool. I almost want to bottle up that time. I just know that it is going to be this small blip in her life but I am treasuring it. We usually walk to preschool in the morning (Scott occasionally drives her on his way to work). People are usually shocked that I walk. I like to walk because some days it is the only time I get out of the house. Plus that way I don't have to strap two kids into car seats. I know it is fast to drive but I would rather avoid the work of rounding them up into their seats rather than just walking out the door. So we walk. This was our view the other morning as we left:
 So gorgeous!

But my favorite part is after school when we pick her up and walk home. Everything they just talked about at school is still fresh in her mind. I love asking her questions about what they are learning about and I am ofter so surprised at how much she understands. I feel like Olive, for a three year old, has a pretty amazing understanding of the greater world. I don't know how to explain, she gets the grandness of everything around her beyond her little three year old bubble. Does that makes sense? Everything she learns she totally applies to herself.

Our conversations are the best things ever. When she was learning the letters we would find things on the way home that started with that letter. She would race down the street yelling "ba ba ba! B says ba!!" Or we look for animal footprints in the snow when they talked about animals in winter time. We would examine the prints and try and decide which animal it was. We mostly found cats prints. We talked all about owls when they learned about them. She showed me their big eyes and explained how they stay awake all night. She she also told me about how they eat mice and chased me (the mouse) home as she was the owl. Good thing our house was a "field" so that I could not be eaten. We would look up in the trees to find birds to come eat seeds from the bird feeder she made. Last week we found all the kinds of transportation around us. I loved how she kept listing things off, like hot air balloons, and boats, and airplanes. Then she started talking about how she has been on airplanes. On Valentines day she explained this big long story about how they followed "heart prints" to Becca's house. I wasn't sure what she was talking about until later that day Becca explained that Olive's whole class walked to her house to give her a special treat.

Today we walked home talking about our bodies. She said "We all have skeletons!!" with so much enthusiasm. We talked about how we couldn't walk home without our bones. We couldn't even stand up! Then we pretended we didn't have bones but just wiggley arms. She thought that was hilarious. Then she told me how we wouldn't be able to put on our shoes, or eat food if we didn't have bodies.  She told me about her brain and her lips and all our other parts.
I knew going into this preschool that I was going to love it. I have a lot of neighbors that have gone there and tell me all of the great things. Ms Jani is Olive's teacher and she is so amazing. They learn a character value every month, and memorize a little quote to go with it. This month they are talking about courage. In the past they have talked about gratitude, charity, perseverance among others. I cherish that they talk about values and how to create a good character. I have loved what this preschool even more than I thought I would. There is something so magical about it being your own child learning these fantastic things. I had heard all of the good and thought "Oh that's so fun!" or "how great. But when this knowledge and traits have been instilled into your little person and the value of that, to me at least, is immeasurable.  Olive adores Ms Jani, she thinks she is the best, which she is. Don't get me wrong, Olive and I still work on things at home. I had wondered and considered homeschooling her, at least for preschool. Maybe because I was a teacher, I see such a great benefit of another adult loving and teaching your child. There is a special relationship there, especially if your teacher is Ms Jani. I also have realized that I have a child with an extremely high social threshold and just being in a classroom can meet that, whereas it would be a huge challenge for me to fill those needs on my own.

She usually holds my hand as we walk and talk. When she has explained everything from school she usually takes off running as the mouse and I have to be the owl to chase her (it's almost a tradition)
I thought I would throw in a shot of Milo and me. I usually wear him in the bjorn and he loves it. When he had reflux it was the only way he would go on a walk, and it had just become habit to carry him in there. He is getting almost too big for it, but I still squish him in anyway.
Then I had to share this last picture too. Last week I bought some new rain boots in an effort to entice spring to come to us. Olive was delighted and wore them around all afternoon, even with the strings on. I think the funniest part of this picture is that she has started dressing herself lately, which is a huge help to me in our rushed crazy mornings. More often than not she comes up with most of her clothes (shirt, leggings, even undies) on backwards, like in this picture. Then she won't let me fix them. Sometimes she will try again to put them on right, so it is especially hilarious when somehow they are backwards again after her second attempt.

One reason that I love this blog is because I can right about these things. These small and simple daily occurrences. I am glad I will have a memory of our conversations on the walk home and why I love preschool and Olive dressing herself. Those are the things I never want to forget.

My Scarf Collection

It has not been that snowy of a winter this year, but this morning everything is white, fresh, and sparkling from the snow. It was a very charming walk to preschool. So I  thought I would post about the winter items I made myself this year.
Here is my ensemble. Scott bought me the coat and gloves for Christmas last year. Then I made the hat and scarf. I made them at different times so I just tried to make them coordinate as best as I could. I think it worked out.

I absolutely love this scarf. I saw this scalloped patter with these same colors in a book but it was for a blanket. When I was browsing at the yarn store I found the exact same colors and thought it would be a perfect scarf. It feels so vintage and the scalloping was so easy. I love it!

Like I said, I not only love winter scarf but I have been wearing tons of accessory ones too. Here are some that I made:

I think this might be my favorite. It is a "potato chip scarf" and it was also really easy to knit. Because of the grey and yellow I wear it all the time. Apparently I only have one palette in my wardrobe!
I ended up having left over of the gold and purple from my winter scarf so I had an idea to make another one . I just am so in love with the colors. I really like this scarf too because I tried to think of a different pattern to do on each piece so it has lots of texture.

Because of pinterest I confescated all of Scott's old tshirts and made some scarfs out of those too. They are much faster than knit scarfs! In fact they didn't even need sewing.  Seriously so easy.

See I told you. I go over the top with almost everything! I just can't control myself and one project leads to another idea and then before you know it I have more scarfs than I know what to do with!
